ABOUT

THE PRACTICE

Evergreen Psychiatry is an outpatient psychiatry practice focused on psychiatric treatment (including telemedicine) for children, adolescents, and young adults (up to age 22). We offer thorough evaluations, ongoing treatment, and an individualized approach. Our office is in Wayne, Pennsylvania, but we can offer telepsychiatry treatment to patients throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Evergreen Psychiatry treats common mental health problems such as anxiety disorders, ADHD, depression, behavioral concerns, and more. Evergreen also cares for patients with trauma and medical complexity, depending on the individual patient and case. Another area of interest for Dr. Harmon is collaboration with pediatricians, and she is happy to collaborate with your child’s doctor with your permission.

FAQ

It can get complicated to tease apart the differences between the different types of mental health providers out there; many of the names sound the same. Unlike other types of mental health treatment providers, psychiatrists are physicians. Psychiatrists attend four years of medical school, followed by at least four additional years of supervised specialty medical training, called residency. Psychiatrists who choose to do a fellowship receive additional training in their areas of specialization; for example, addiction psychiatry or child psychiatry. Psychiatrists are licensed to prescribed medications and are trained to perform psychotherapy, though some do one or the other more often.

Of the mental health providers who are licensed to prescribed medication, psychiatrists have typically had the most lengthy/extensive training including years of closely supervised practice. This can provide comfort for some families when making difficult treatment choices related to mental health. For patients with medical complexity (medical diagnoses or multiple diagnoses, other medications, significant family history), a psychiatrist can be a valuable asset in making safe, indicated treatment choices and in interpreting symptoms in a medical context.

Evergreen Psychiatry takes many precautions to protect your privacy. Your medical records are stored electronically in a HIPAA-compliant electronic health record. We will communicate with you via phone or secure portal message through the Luminello portal. Your records will not be released to a third party without your signed consent.

Evergreen psychiatry does not participate with any insurance plans; however, many patients with insurance are able to submit a billing statement to their insurance to receive a partial reimbursement for psychiatry services. For patients with “out-of-network” benefits for psychiatry, we provide a billing statement that you can submit to your insurer. Please see our Policies and Billing section for more details.

For some patients, there is an element of added privacy protection, as your treatment information is not shared with your insurance unless you decide to submit the information yourself. Additionally, patients and doctors working within this type of system often find that the treatment relationship is simpler, allowing for greater flexibility to do what is right for the patient at the time. You and your doctor can decide how often it makes sense to meet & how the sessions should be spent, without worrying about meeting any particular one-size-fits-all requirements.

The first step to scheduling an appointment is to complete a brief, confidential online form with your contact information. You can also call and leave a message at (610) 600-1289. Dr. Harmon or an Evergreen staff member will return your call, chat with you briefly, and, if we believe we can help you/your family, offer you an appointment. See our Appointments and Contact page for more details.

DR. SARA HARMON

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Dr. Harmon attended medical school at the University of Virginia, followed by specialty training in a “Triple Board” residency training program at the University of Pittsburgh (UPMC) that included comprehensive training in general pediatrics, general (adult) psychiatry, and child/adolescent psychiatry. While at UPMC, Dr. Harmon served as chief resident for the Child Psychiatry and Triple Board programs, and received numerous awards including an AAP CATCH grant and an AACAP Educational Outreach Program award. Dr. Harmon is double board-certified and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) as well as the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). In addition to Dr. Harmon’s work at Evergreen psychiatry, she supports local pediatric practices through an integrated care model.

TREATMENT APPROACH

EVIDENCE-BASED

As a physician, Dr. Harmon highly values empiric evidence and tries to provide evidence-based care when appropriate evidence is available. She takes her oath to “first, do no harm” seriously, which means that she makes an ongoing effort to balance the potential risks and benefits of an intervention, and to share her understanding clearly with her patients.

CARING

Dr. Harmon loves working with children and adolescents, and her calm, friendly demeanor helps put patients (and their families) at ease. She enthusiastically celebrates her patients’ successes along with them, and remains an optimistic advocate during setbacks. Dr. Harmon puts particular emphasis on listening intently to her patients and solving problems together.

MULTI-DIMENSIONAL

Dr. Harmon does prescribe medication, but believes that medication is just one component of a thorough treatment plan to facilitate improved mental health. She is happy to work with your current psychotherapist or to make a community referral for therapy. For a small subset of patients, she may provide therapy and medication management or therapy alone. Dr. Harmon may also recommend lifestyle changes relating to sleep, diet, exercise, and other habits to support overall wellness.
